So, That's How You Got Those Arms?

Forget personal training, bootcamps, gym memberships, just masturbate...whoops, sorry...Just purchase any one of these innovative exercise products.  Cha-ching!  People will buy anything.  I'm going to invent a new revolutionary fitness product.  What?  Don't know yet, but it will be new, revolutionary, save you time and get you ripped, and maybe make you smarter.  Haven't decided yet.  In the mean time I will continue to do it the long and hard way, by lifting weights, doing cardio and eating right.  For shame...

If They Work for Kim Kardashian

After having her lavish wedding [which cost a reported 14 million dollars] paid for by E! Kim K should jump on this settlement.  Kim was once a spokesperson for Reebok's toning shoe but has since crossed over and now endorses Skechers.  Smart move because Reebok was just ordered to pay $25 million in customer refunds to settle charges by the Federal Trade Commission that it falsely advertised that its "toning" shoes could measurably strengthen the muscles in the legs, thighs and butt.

Rescue Yourself

In 1972 a plane carrying 45 people, including a Uruguayan rugby team and their family and friends, crashed into the desolate, frigid, and unforgiving Andes mountains.  29 people survived the crash.  A few days later, an avalanche took 8 more lives when it flooded their makeshift shelter.  Search parties from three countries looked for the missing plane, but the search was called off after eight days. The survivors, having found a small transistor radio on the plane, heard that the search had been cancelled.  Here's an excerpt from the book Alive, describing this moment:

"The others who had clustered around Roy, upon hearing the news, began to sob and pray, all except Parrado, who looked calmly up the mountains which rose to the west. Gustavo Nicolich came out of the plane and, seeing their faces, knew what they had heard...Nicolich climbed through the hole in the wall of suitcases and rugby shirts, crouched at the mouth of the dim tunnel, and looked at the mournful faces which were turned towards him.

'Hey boys,' he shouted, 'there's some good news! We just heard on the radio. They've called off the search.'

Inside the crowded plane there was silence. As the hopelessness of their predicament enveloped them, they wept.

'Why the hell is that good news?' Paez shouted angrily at Nicolich.

'Because it means,' Nicolich said, 'that we're going to get out of here on our own.'"

Jon's On A Rampage

The 24 year old Jones successfully defended his Light heavyweight title last night against former champion and MMA Legend Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson in Denver Colorado.

Rampage was in-shape, focused and determined but, the young Phenom did exactly what he's been doing, making most his opponents, look like a second-tier fighter as he made the first title defense of what is shaping up to be a long title run.

Jones submitted Jackson with a rear naked choke in the fourth round, further cementing his grip on the top spot in one of the UFC's deepest division.

I highlighted Jon Jones relaxation and meditation techniques last month.  Bones Says Relax

After his dominating performance at UFC 135 here's a look at what it takes to train like a world champion and elite athlete.

20 Years of Nevermind

Time really does fly.  Tomorrow marks the 20 year anniversary of the original release of Nirvana's Nevermind.  My first thought was 'I can't believe it's been 20 years.'  Just like I could not believe that on September 13th it had been 15 years since the death of hip hop Icon Tupac Shakur.  And it's already been 15 years since lead singer of Nirvana Kurt Cobain was found dead in his home.

Way to start off a blog post...

I don't think I have to write about how Nirvana/ Cobain changed the music scene and captivated an entire generation, it's been done to death.  What I will say is that to this day Kurt Cobain remains one of the most compelling artists that I have ever come across.  Was he a tortured artist? Was he pretentious? Self loathing? Yeah. All those things.

He had a well documented history with substance abuse [heroin] and often seemed depressed.  But he made great music!  And we were robbed of more.  He said in one of his last interviews that he wanted to do some solo acoustic music....how f'n amazing could that have been?!

But, if all we are left with is his Nirvana offerings....that will do just fine.

What ever it is, save it, it just isn't good enough.  Get off your ass, stop making excuses, change your life.  It's easy to say I'm tired, I don't have time, my back hurts, my leg is sore [at least you have 2 of them].  Just look at the guys in these photos, do you think they feel sorry for themselves?  Should we?

I think these pics are truly inspirational, the men in the pics are truly inspirational.

Shady Business

Gym memberships among top consumer complaints

Some clients complain they're still billed after cancelling membership

In 2008, consumers complained to the bureau 654 times about billing problems at their gym, which was five times more than complained in 2004.
When Mary Jo Morrison of Toronto tried canceling her membership, she learned how difficult, frustrating and expensive it could be.
She went to her gym and cancelled in person, only to find her bank account was still being debited for monthly fees.
"I called them up and said, 'Why charge me?'" she told CBC News. "They said, 'No problem. Just send me a written fax saying you wish to cancel again,' and I did. I faxed them," she explained.
'I checked my statement again, and they were still charging me.'—Mary Jo Morrison, former gym member
"[I] never heard anything about it again until I checked my statement again, and they were still charging me."
She put a stop payment on her account and assumed the matter was closed.
The gym responded by sending Morrison a letter saying she owed $400, because she couldn't prove she had cancelled her contract.
When the gym threatened to turn the account over to a collection agency, she reached an agreement to pay $200 to make the problem go away.
John Lawford of the Public Interest Advocacy Centre says it all comes down to cancelling properly. He says simply telling the gym is not enough.
"It is better to write a letter, send it to the gym and to the gym's head office, and you have evidence you quit," he told CBC News.
"It is a problem you can make into the bank's problem and the gym's rather than your problem."

It's big box gyms and boutique style studios who try to strong arm members/ clients into shady long term contracts that turn people off of dealing with Fitness Coaches/ Professionals.  If you are not enjoying your experience, not 100% satisfied with the facility or not getting the results you expected, you should be able to walk away hassle free.

Shake It Up!

Protein is one of the most important nutrients for your body especially when it comes to building muscle.  The absolute best way to get your required amount of protein is through solid food [lean cuts of meat, fish, nuts] but it is not always easy, especially when you're working a full time job and don't always have time to prepare meals.  Enter the protein shake!

After a workout is one of the best times to get protein into the body.  Because solid food takes more time to digest and breakdown the protein and send it to the muscles, it is best to take a protein shake immediately following your workout since it only takes about 30 minutes to reach your muscles after ingestion.

Step by Step Tutorial: How To Make Your Protein Shake

STEP I: START WITH ICE
  • Use 1-4 cubes for a thin, chilled shake
  • Use 5-10 cubes for a thicker, pudding like shake

STEP II: PICK A FRUIT

If you like a thick shake use frozen over fresh
  • Strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, orange, kiwi, pineapple, apple

STEP III: SCOOP OF PROTEIN

One or two scoops is all you need.  I use Six Star Pro Nutrition Whey Protein Plus.

STEP IV: SELECT A NUT OR SEED
  • Walnuts, almonds, nut butter
  • flax, hemp or chia seeds

STEP V: POUR SOME LIQUID

How much depends on how tick or thin you want it, I go with one cup.

  • Water, unsweetened almond milk, soy milk, organic low fat milk

STEP VI: CHOOSE YOUR TOPPER

This step is optional....but a nice way to finish off your shake.
  • dark chocolate, ground  coffee bean, cinnamon, oats, coconut, vanilla extract, granola

STEP VII: PUT IT ALL TOGETHER

Experiment with different combinations and flavours.

This is my go-to post workout protein shake:
  • 1 cup unsweetened Almond Milk
  • 1 cup frozen mixed berries [strawberry, blackberry, raspberry, blueberry]
  • 2 scoops protein powder
  • 1 tbsp ground flax
  • 1 whole banana
  • 1 tbsp cocoa powder

Don't Drink Coke, Inject It!

Look, I don't like to tell people what to do, I hate being told what to, but when someone asks me for advice or asks me about my personal nutrition and training routines I am obligated to share, its part of the oath I took when passing the bar....

A couple of weeks ago after a softball game, some friends and I went to a sandwich shop to grab a bite to eat.  Two of them got soda, one being coke, the other guy bought a pitcher of beer and of course I had my bottle of water.  We shared a couple of laughs over my water drinking, one day when I grow up and become a man type of stuff.  We talked about drinking sodas and they mentioned they were trying not to drink so much beer, blah, blah, blah.  My response was quick and easy, first drop the pop then worry about the beer.

Below is a timeline of the effects of coke on your body.  It was given to me by one of my coaches.  I haven't had coke in 10 years but I share points from this article whenever it comes up.

What Happens to Your Body Within an Hour of Drinking a Coke

Do you want to be healthy? Drinking soda is bad for your health in so many ways; science
can’t even state all the consequences. Here’s what happens in your body when you assault
it with a Coke:

Within the first 10 minutes, 10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. This is 100 percent of
your recommended daily intake, and the only reason you don’t vomit as a result of the
overwhelming sweetness is because phosphoric acid cuts the flavor.
