"300 pounds of fun!" That's how Mayor of Toronto, Rob Ford described himself while hosting a press conference for his 'Cut the Waist Challenge'. Ford tipped the scale at 330lbs while his brother City Councillor Doug Ford weighted in at a slim by comparison 275lbs.
This is all part of the Mayors aim to encourage the public to embrace a healthier lifestyle. His goal is to lose 50lbs in 5 months, while ultimately getting himself down to 225lbs.
The Mayor says his weight loss plan will be based on "common sense" - more exercise and less eating, particularly late night snacking. It's funny how common sense kicks in when you reach 330lbs.
The final weight-in will be June 18 a mere 5 months away. Realistically 50lbs if he is truly committed to the process should be a walk brisk [really brisk] walk in the park. The question is how committed is he? How often will he be working out [if at all?]?, will he be seeking professional advice on nutrition and fitness? Sadly these topics where not touched upon during the 'event' yesterday afternoon.
Personally, if he really wanted to make a statement he should have made it 100lbs and given himself 6 months. Given his current weight, along with his height and lifestyle that is what he needs.
How exactly will the Mayor go about this grandiose lifestyle change? Will he be sharing some helpful tips, like healthy eating plans and workout regimes? Who will be monitoring whether he doing it the 'healthy' way and not using dietary aids or stapling his stomach? [You never know!] How will he promote such a change to the public so we can also embrace the change?
There doesn't really seem to be much of a plan in place. Hopefully they've thought this through and aren't just flying by the seats of their extremely large [for now] pants.
I'll be watching this challenge with keen interest- as I'm sure the rest of the media in Toronto will.
Say goodbye to this image of Rob Ford....
